Drie wedstrijden, drie keer winst: Bas Turk over zijn REHVA-avontuur
Wat begint met een afstudeeronderzoek kan uitgroeien tot een internationaal avontuur. Dat bewees Bas Turk. Na zijn winst in de Nederlands REHVA Student Competition vertegenwoordigde hij Nederland tijdens de Europese finale. Vervolgens mocht hij Europa vertegenwoordigen tijdens de HVAC World Student Competition in de Verenigde Staten. Hij won alle drie de wedstrijden. Toch is het niet de wereldtitel die hem het meeste is bijgebleven.
Een onderzoek met maatschappelijke impact
Tijdens zijn afstuderen zocht Bas naar een onderwerp dat aansloot bij zijn studie Bouwfysica en Installatietechniek aan de TU Eindhoven met een grote maatschappelijke impact. Via een gastcollege kwam hij in aanraking met Better Shelter, een innovatieve vluchtelingentent die wereldwijd wordt ingezet. Voor de tent bestond al een oplossing voor koude omstandigheden, maar oververhitting in warme klimaten was nog nauwelijks onderzocht. Dat werd het onderwerp van zijn afstudeeronderzoek.
“Voor de Better Shelter bestond al een winterkit, maar er waren nog geen oplossingen onderzocht om oververhitting in de zomer te voorkomen. Juist omdat deze tenten vaak in warme gebieden worden gebruikt, wilde ik daar verder onderzoek naar doen.”
Voor zijn onderzoek bleef het niet bij theorie. Samen met vrienden en familie bouwde hij vijf tenten op de campus van de universiteit om metingen uit te voeren.
De eerste stap: de Nederlandse voorronde
Op advies van zijn afstudeerbegeleider schreef Bas zich in voor de Nederlandse REHVA Student Competition. Dat bleek een goede keuze. Tijdens de finale presenteerde hij het resultaat van bijna een jaar onderzoek. De feedback van de jury hielp hem om zijn verhaal verder aan te scherpen.
“Het was leuk om mijn werk te mogen presenteren. Je hebt er bijna een jaar aan gewerkt en de jury gaf waardevolle feedback om mijn presentatie nog beter te maken.”
Een internationaal podium in Brussel
Na zijn overwinning in Nederland reisde Bas af naar Brussel voor de Europese finale. Samen met zijn coach Arash Rasooli van TVVL bereidde hij zich voor op de presentatie. Arash is juryvoorzitter en organisator van de competitie en begeleidde Bas ook in het traject na de Nederlandse ronde. In Brussel presenteerde elf studenten uit verschillende Europese landen hun onderzoek. Naast de wedstrijd was er volop ruimte om elkaar te leren kennen. De kandidaten volgden een gezamenlijk programma met onder andere een diner in het Koninklijke Bibliotheek en een bezoek aan het Atomium.
“Het mooiste was niet het winnen, maar de hechte groep uit heel Europa die we in Brussel vormden.”
Volgens Bas maakte juist die internationale sfeer de competitie bijzonder. De Europese finale was onderdeel van een internationaal congres, waardoor hij zijn onderzoek aan een groot publiek kon presenteren. Na zijn overwinning mocht hij bovendien nog een tweede presentatie geven tijdens de algemene ledenvergadering van REHVA.
Van Europees kampioen naar het wereldpodium
Met de Europese titel op zak vertegenwoordigde Bas Europa tijdens de HVAC World Student Competition in de Verenigde Staten. De wereldfinale vond plaats tijdens de ASHRAE Conference in Tampa, Florida. De reis begon met een uitdaging. Zijn poster was niet meegekomen met het vliegtuig. Op zondag gingen Bas en Arash op zoek naar een printshop. Dat bleek nog een hele opgave, omdat bijna alle winkels gesloten waren.
“Daar konden we achteraf gelukkig om lachen. Ik was erg blij dat Arash meeging naar de Verenigde Staten. Dan sta je er niet alleen voor.”
Meer dan een wedstrijd
De REHVA Student Competition leverde Bas veel meer op dan een prijs. Zijn onderzoek kreeg een internationaal podium en opende deuren die anders gesloten waren gebleven. Hij sloot zich aan bij een werkgroep van Artsen zonder Grenzen, begeleidde een vak bij Avans Hogeschool waarin studenten een vluchtelingentent ontwierpen en presenteerde zijn onderzoek tijdens de TVVL Techniekdag. Samen met studenten reisde hij zelfs af naar Calais om voedselpakketten uit te delen aan vluchtelingen. Inmiddels is hij ook al enkele jaren jurylid bij de Nederlandse voorronde van de REHVA Student Competition.
“De competitie heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik de vruchten kon plukken van al het harde werk dat in mijn afstudeeronderzoek zat.”
Durf de stap te zetten
Voor studenten die twijfelen om mee te doen, heeft Bas een duidelijke boodschap.
“Niet geschoten is altijd mis. Denk goed na over wat jouw presentatie uniek maakt. Dat hoeft niet alleen in het onderwerp te zitten, maar kan ook de manier zijn waarop je jouw verhaal vertelt.”

What starts as a graduation project can turn into an international adventure. Bas Turk knows this better than anyone. After winning the Dutch REHVA Student Competition, he represented the Netherlands in the European final. He then went on to represent Europe at the HVAC World Student Competition in the United States, winning all three competitions. Yet, it is not the world title that has stayed with him the most.
Research with social impact
During his graduation project, Bas wanted to focus on a topic that matched his studies in Building Physics and Services at Eindhoven University of Technology while making a real social impact. During a guest lecture, he was introduced to Better Shelter, an innovative refugee shelter that is used around the world. Although a solution already existed to improve the shelter’s performance in cold climates, little research had been done on preventing overheating in hot environments. This became the focus of his graduation research.
“There was already a winter kit for the Better Shelter, but no solutions had been investigated to prevent overheating during the summer. Since these shelters are often used in hot climates, I wanted to explore that gap.”
His research combined theory with practice. Together with friends and familiy, Bas assembled five shelters on the university campus to carry out measurements and test different solutions.
The first step: The dutch competition
On the recommendation of his graduation supervisor, Bas entered the Dutch REHVA Student Competition. It turned out to be an excellent decision. During the national final, he presented the results of nearly a year of research. The jury’s feedback helped him to further strengthen his presentation.
“It was great to present my work. You spent almost a year on your research, and the jury gave valuable feedback that helped me improve my presentation.”
An international stage in Brussels
After winning the Dutch competition, Bas travelled to Brussels for the European final. Together with his coach, Arash Rasooli from TVVL, he prepared fort he presentation. Arash is the chair of the jury and the organiser of the competition, and also guided Bas thoughout the proces following the Dutch round. In Brussels, eleven students from across Europe presented their research. The competition offered much more than presentations alone. Participants followed a shared programme that included a dinner at the Royal Library of Belgium and a visit to the Atomium, creating plenty of opportunities to get to know one another.
“The best part wasn’t winning. It was the close group we formed with students from all over Europe during our time in Brussels.”
According to Bas, that international atmosphere is what made the competition so special. The European final was held as part of the REHVA Annual Meeting, allowing him to present his research to a large international audience. After winning, he was also invited to give a second presentation during the REHVA General Assembly.
From European champion to the World Stage
After winning the European final, Bas represented Europe at the HVAC World Student Competition in the United States. The world final took place during the ASHRAE Conference in Tampa, Florida. The trip began with an unexpected challenge. His poster had not arrived with his luggage, so on Sunday he and Arash had to search for a print shop. Finding one proved difficult because most shops were closed.
“Looking back, we can laugh about it now. I was really happy Arash travelled with me to the United States. It makes a big difference when you’re not on your own.”
More than a competition
For Bas, the REHVA Student Competition delivered much more than a trophy. It gave his research an international platform and opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed. He joined a working group with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), supervised a course at Avans University of Applied Sciences in which students had to design a refugee shelter, and presented his research at the TVVL Techniekdag. Together with the students, he even travelled to Calais to help distribute food packages to refugees. He has also been a member of the jury fort he Dutch preliminary round of the REHVA Student Competition for several years now.
“The competition allowed me to reap the rewards of all the hard work I had put into my graduation research.”

“You have nothing to lose by trying. Think carefully about what makes your presentation unique. It doesn’t have to be the topic itself. It can also be the way you tell your story.”
